Individuals being persecuted in their home countries may apply for asylum, refugee status, or temporary protected status in Los Angeles County and the rest of the United States.
- Asylum: Individuals already physically present in the U.S. may apply for asylum if they have a well-founded fear of persecution because of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.
- Refugee: A refugee is a person outside the United States who is unable or unwilling to return to his or her native country because he or she has suffered past persecution or will suffer persecution because of his or her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion.
- Temporary protected status (TPS): This is an immigration status for foreign nationals residing in the United States whose home countries are temporarily unsafe or overly dangerous due to political instability, warfare or natural disasters.
- Special immigrant juvenile status (SIJS): An unmarried young person under the age of 18 or 21 who is in the United States and needs the protection of a juvenile court because of abuse, abandonment or neglect by a parent may be eligible for SIJ status and eventually, lawful permanent residency (a green card).
