U.S. Immigration Announces Series of Action Related for Family Detention Centers

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson has made it clear that our borders are not open to illegal immigration, and that individuals apprehended crossing the border illegally are a Department priority. However, per the Obama administration announcement on Wednesday, immigration authorities will no longer cite deterrence as a factor in deciding whether to detain immigrant families caught illegally crossing the U.S. border. Moreover, immigration authorities will seek to improve the living conditions and access to attorney in its three family detention centers located in Texas and Pennsylvania. Lastly, ICE would start reviewing the cases of families detained beyond 90 days to determine whether they should remain in custody.
